Melbourne Cup winner Protectionist (Ger) will take up stallion duties at Gestut
Rottgen in Germany for the 2017 breeding season at a fee of €6,500.
Originally trained by Andreas Wohler, Protectionist won on his debut at
Hannover before finishing second at the end of the his two-year-old campaign in
a German Group II that was initerestingly won by this year's Melbourne Cup
winner Almandin (Ger).
He ran twice at three, winning the Listed Derby Trial at Bremen, and developed
into a leading performer at age of four posting victories in the Group II Hansa-Preis and the Group II
Prix Kergorlay before beating Red Cadeaux to claim Melbourne Cup.
He raced on unsuccessfully in Australia with Kris Lees before returning to
Wohler's care earlier this year to win three races including the Group I
Grosser Preis von Berlin in August.
Like Almandin, he is a son of the late great champion German sire Monsun, whose
other Melbourne Cup winning son Fiorente (IRE) stands at Sun Stud in Victoria
at a fee of $17,600.
