The 800m heat on the course proper was restricted to horses with Group I entries during the Flemington Melbourne Cup carnival and even without Capitalist and Star Turn it held plenty of interest.

Extreme Choice was ridden by Craig Newitt and jumped from the inside, leading from the off, with Russian Revolution a length behind at halfway with Astern parked behind them.

The other three runners in the heat, Turn Me Loose, Southern Legend and Verstappen were in a line towards the outside rail and ridden along over the final 100 metres.

At the finish it was a comfortable Extreme Choice winning the heat by a head over Russian Revolution with Turn Me Loose a neck away third in a hand timed 45.99 seconds and the last 200m in 10.73 seconds.

Southern Legend and Verstappen finished a head behind Turn Me Loose with Astern last of the six under James McDonald but only beaten two lengths and well on the bridle through the line.

Extreme Choice, Astern and Russian Revolution are slated to meet again in the Group I Coolmore Stud Stakes down the straight 1200 metres on Victoria Derby day.

Capitalist was scratched from the trial to run in Friday night's Group I Manikato Stakes at Moonee Valley while Star Turn trialled later in the morning on the inside grass.
