Stockwell Return to Marketplace

Tara Madgwick - Thursday October 6

Victoria's historic Stockwell will make a return to the vendor ranks at yearling sales in 2017 after an absence of more than 20 years.

The re-branded Stockwell Thoroughbreds, under the management of Mike and Brodie Becker, will have drafts at several yearling sales venues in the New Year.

"We will offer select drafts in Melbourne, Adelaide and the Sydney Classic sale under the Stockwell banner," said Mike Becker.

" We have a wonderful facility for preparing yearlings as has been evidenced by our results in the past few years under the former Emirates Park banner."

Becker said there were still spaces for more yearlings if owners were looking for preparation of their yearlings or other sales.

"We have the facility and many years experience, so owners can be assured of the best care of their yearlings. In addition, we do not charge a commission on sales as we feel owners already face enough risks and costs in getting good sales results."

Rock SturdyStockwell rode to prominence with the progeny of the great Showdown in the 1960's and 70's and regularly topped the Melbourne sales at the former Newmarket sales venue.

Owner, the late Ken Cox never took his yearlings to interstate sales, preferring to stay in his home state – a move that underpinned the Victorian sales and Victorian breeding industry.

"Our own draft for Melbourne next year will be headlined by our Fastnet Rock colt, a half brother to Vain Stakes winner Get the Nod, " Becker said. "We also have a very nice Dream Ahead filly and we are thrilled with the start he has made with his first crop runners."

Stockwell Thoroughbreds is currently standing first season sire ROCK STURDY, a Gr 2 winning son of Fastnet Rock who is emerging rapidly as a successful sire of sires with his sons Hinchinbrook and Smart Missile taking National honours in the first and second season sires ranks in 2015-16!
