It's Somewhat Romps in Craven Plate

Mark Smith - Saturday October 1

Just four stayers went to the post for Saturday's $150,000 Group III APN Outdoor Craven Plate (2000m) at Randwick, which proved easy pickings for Godolphin import It's Somewhat (USA).

Sent off an odds-on favourite under James McDonald, It's Somewhat displayed a superior turn of foot to defeat Spiritjim (Galileo) by four and three-quarter lengths with the Melbourne invader Pinstripe Lane (Pins) a further two and quarter lengths back in third.(photos Lisa Grimm).

"He has been a very honest campaigner over a number of seasons so he deserved a good win like that," O'Shea said.

"I think he would have taken a fair bit of beating no matter what was in it today, he was very impressive and he did it quite easily."

With his fifth stakes win, It's Somewhat advances his overall record to 6 wins, 3 seconds and 6 thirds from 28 starts with earnings of $864,874

O'Shea and the Caulfield Cup is under consideration for It's Somewhat or alternately the Group I Mackinnon Stakes (2000m) followed by the Group I Kingston Town Stakes (1800m) in Western Australia.

Previously trained in England when trained by Mark Johnston, It's somewhat was a Listed winner over seven furlongs at Newbury back in August 2013 he then finished second, beaten a neck, in the Group II Juddmonte Royal Lodge Stakes over a mile at Newmarket.

In July 2014, he was third behind Mukhadram and Trading Leather in the Group One Coral-Eclipse over a mile and a quarter at Sandown Park.

By Americain's sire Dynaformer, It's Somewhat is out of the unraced Royal Academy mare Sometime herself a daughter of the grand broodmare Alidiva (Chief Singer) who earned the honour of being Ireland and Italy's Broodmare of the Year in 1997.

Alidiva's first three foals were Group 1 winners, Taipan (by Last Tycoon) and Sometime's sister, One Thousand Guineas heroine, Sleepytime, and brother, Sussex Stakes winner Ali-Royal, who stood for a short time at stud in Australia before his untimely death.
