Best On Breeding

Mark Smith - Thursday January 2

Wow! there are some serious bluebloods contesting the Hyland Race Colours Hcp on the Kensington track at Randwick on Saturday while up at the Gold Coast it’s the last chance saloon for those looking to force a place into next weeks $2 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic with big fields in the Aquis Gold Pearl Quality for fillies and the Aquis Gold Nugget Quality for colts and geldings.Osamu the record priced $1.7 million Exceed And Excel yearling debuts at Randwick on Saturday

At Randwick we will see the career debut of the most expensive yearling sold at public auction by Exceed And Excel when Aquis Farm’s $1.7 million Easter purchase Osamu steps out.

Tyreel Stud has retained a share in the Chris Waller-trained colt as has G1G Racing & Breeding who also have interests in the $520,000 Magic Millions purchase Formentera who makes his debut for Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott, the $350,000 Written Tycoon colt Remorseless, who finished third behind Farnan and Every Rose in what looks to be an exceptional edition of the Wyong Magic Millions, and the $150,000 Written Tycoon colt The Big Easy, who will be making start number three for  Ciaron Maher & David Eustace.

Another very interesting first starter is the $300,000 Frankel filly Hungry Heart who will carry the Yulong silks. She is the first foal of the lightly raced Pivotal mare Harlech who is a daughter of the talented Azamour mare Zoowraa a Listed winner at Newbury and from the family of the Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes winner Risen Star.A $300,000 daughter of Frankel, Hungry Heart makes her career debut at Randwick

What’s a 2yo race in Sydney without at least one runner by the champion Snitzel and Anthony Cummings will debut his $340,000 Gold Coast purchase Philizzy who is a half-sister to eight winners including the Group II MVRC Stutt Stakes winner and Group 1 MRC Toorak Handicap runner-up Sovereign Nation, out of a half-sister to that remarkable New Zealand mare Princess Coup.

A great race to watch but for the Best On Breeding we will head to the Gold Coast where bookmakers expect Godolphin’s $625,000 Brazen Beau colt Conceited and Aquis Farm’s $670,000 Not A Single Doubt colt Anders, to fight out the finish of the Aquis Gold Nugget Quality

But in this sea of bluebloods, we will be hoping that the $2,000 Magic Millions National Yearling purchase The Drinks Cart can do enough to force his way into the big dance in seven days time.

A son of the 2014 Magic Millions 2YO Classic winner Unencumbered, The Drinks Cart is out of the Snippetson mare Snipzu.

Trained by Liam Birchley, Snipzu was a tough, precocious two-year-old. She finished second to Hussousa in the 2011 Listed Gimcrack Stakes before heading home to Brisbane to win by 7 lengths over 1000 metres at Eagle Farm carrying topweight.Snipzu the dam of The Drinks Cart was a tough and talented 2yo - image Mark Smith

She made it two in a row over the same track and distance a week later where her winning margin was reduced to three and a half lengths when spotting the field up to 3kgs.

Two months later she was third in the Listed Calaway Gal Stakes and was third again behind Driefontein and Sizzling in the Group III B J McLachlan Stakes leading up to a midfield finish in the Magic Millions 2yo Classic won by Driefontein in the steward’s room.

Snipzu’s juvenile season was far from over. She then went on to win at the Sunshine Coast before a pair of seconds at Rockhampton and the Gold Coast, before rounding out a busy season with a facile win in the valuable   JJ Atkins/Sky Racing QTIS 600 2YO Plate at Toowoomba.

Snipzu did not win after her juvenile year but her race record of four wins and six places with earnings of over $475,000 and breeding was enough for Dermot Farrington Bloodstock/P Ford to shell out $190,000 on behalf of Gilgai Farm’s Rick Jamieson.

Snipzu’s dam Pilgrim (Danehill) is a winning half-sister to the Group 1 STC Ranvet Stakes winner Arkady (Myocard) and to the dams of the Group II Challenge Stakes winner Olonana (More Than Ready) and AJC Breeders Plate winner Super Savings (Secret Savings) as well as the very smart Perth 2yo, the Group III  WATC Sires' Produce Stakes winner Paris Petard (Mujahid).

The Drinks Cart took just one start to earn his purchase price back with interest.

Trained by Toby and Trent Edmonds, The Drinks Cart wiped off his purchase price with interest at his first start when he banked $19,800 from his win at a Gold Coast mid-week meeting. He has made one subsequent start, a well-beaten fourth over 1000 metres at Eagle Farm won by Gotta Kiss (Not A Single Doubt) and has some ground to make up on the third-placed Anders who he opposes again on Saturday.
