Kiwi Bred Wins G1 Metrop

Tara Madgwick - Saturday September 29
In a race dominated by imported European stayers, the Group I ATC The Metropolitan over 2400 metres at Randwick on Saturday delivered victory for progressive Kiwi bred gelding Patrick Erin, prepared by champion trainer Chris Waller.

Patrick ErinSent to the post a modest hope at $16, Patrick Erin prevailed over his stablemate and race favourite Brimham Rocks (IRE) in a photo finish, scoring officially by a short half head with Corey Brown in the saddle.

Waller said he remains undecided on which race Patrick Erin will contest next but suggested the 3200m of the Group I Melbourne Cup would suit.

"Not sure. Might look at something bigger. The St Leger here in two weeks and obviously you've got the Cups in Melbourne," Waller said.

"Two miles is really going to suit him to hit his peak.

"I can just see him improving. He's a tough horse. Keeping him fresh."

Patrick Erin joined the Waller stable earlier this year after coming across from New Zealand and was sixth in the Group I ATC Sydney Cup in the autumn.

He has the overall record of 11 wins and eight placings from 27 starts with earnings in excess of $660,000.

Not offered at auction, Patrick Erin is a sibling to stakes-placed Gallant Boy and Beijing Boy being from the good producer Mega Babe, who has had six foals to race and all are winners.

Patrick Erin is the best of five stakes-winners from Montjeu's Group II winning son Gallant Guru.
