Black Caviar Strikes for the First Time as a Grand-Dam

Tara Madgwick - Thursday April 11

The record breaking $10million sale of the first foal of Winx earlier this week put the spotlight on champion mares and one undefeated champion whose offspring have never hit the sale ring is Black Caviar and she featured as the grand-dam of a winner at Wyong on Thursday which got us thinking about how many babies are now in this tightly held family.

Four year-old I Am Invincible gelding Keysborough is no champion, but he is now a winner after breaking the ice in the 1000m maiden as favourite at his eighth race start.

Trained by Team Hawkes, Keysborough is the first born foal of Black Caviar’s first born foal Oscietra (Exceed and Excel), who was retired to stud after two modest wins from five starts.

Black Caviar has been a fruitful producer at stud in contrast to Winx and has now had eight foals since she retired to stud in 2013 with the last of them a gorgeous colt by The Autumn Sun born last year and she is now in foal to Snitzel.

Even The Queen wanted to meet Black Caviar at the height of her fame!

So how have they gone and what’s in the pipeline? There is often plenty of interest in the offspring of daughters of champion mares and Black Caviar is moving into that phase of her career.

2014 Oscietra (f Exceed and Excel) – 2 wins and now at stud with her record below.
