Thalassophile Swamps Them in Aspiration Quality

Mark Smith - Saturday March 4

Five of the ten runners were winning chances with one hundred metres left to run in the Group III MostynCopper Aspiration Quality (1600m) at Randwick on Saturday.

It was the day for the 4yo Not a Single Doubt mare Thalassophile to open her stakes account.

Ridden by Craig Williams for Chris Waller, Thalassophile edged out Pink Ivory (Redwood) by a short-half-head, with Cliff's Art (IRE) (Canford Cliffs) a neck back in third.

A luckless second in the Group III Belle Of The Turf Stakes at Gosford in December, Thalassophile advances her record to five wins, four seconds, and four thirds from 19 starts with earnings of $481,005.

"It was a lovely ride from Craig and a well-deserved win," Waller said.

"We will try and find the easiest race possible to make it three (wins in a row). That's the general pattern; we don't aim too high with a horse like her. She's doing a great job, and this is one step down from the real good horses.

"It's not all about Group 1 racing, and many horses never get to that level, and she might be one of them. But she's labelled herself a Group III winner, and there'll be another win or two somewhere for her. There are lots of good races to run in, and she'll win lots of money."

Thalassophile has validated the decision of Go Bloodstock's Sir Owen Glenn to take the daughter of Not A Single Doubt home after failing to make her $350,000 reserve when offered by Newgate Farm at the 2020 Inglis Easter Yearling Sale.

A half-sister to Group III placed Maracaibo (Redoute's Choice), Thalassophile is the best of three winners from as many runners for the unraced Encosta De Lago mare Spanish Lake.

Thalassophile passed in short of her $350,000 reserve at Easter

A half-sister to Group 1 winner Calveen, Group II winner Kosi Bay, Group III winner Fireworks, and Listed winner and Group 1 second Striker,  Spanish Lake foaled a Flying Artie filly last spring before missing to Golden Slipper winner Stay Inside.

Thalassophile brings up the 80th stakes-winner for the late Arrowfield stallion, Not a Single Doubt.
