Pommy to ride Japanese horse in The Everest

Clinton Payne - Thursday October 5

The Australian Turf Club and Australian Bloodstock have booked a UK-based jockey to make his Randwick debut aboard Brave Smash in Saturday week's $10 million The Everest (1200m).

Irish-born Group I winning hoop Jamie Spencer was confirmed as the rider for the Darren Weir-trained galloper on Thursday.

Spencer won the 2013 Mackinnon Stakes aboard Side Glance at Flemington and has won more than 20 Group I events England, Ireland, France the USA, UAE, and Singapore.

"Brave Smash has a racing pattern that will benefit from an experienced rider and Jamie Spencer fits that criteria perfectly," ATC Executive General Manager of Racing James Heddo said.

"Jamie has ridden for Australian Bloodstock successfully in the past and the ATC is very excited to have Jamie visit Australia again to take part in a race which is attracting huge interest across the world."

Brave Smash will race in blinkers on Saturday week after being beaten into second in his last outing at Caulfield. The former Japanese galloper is a $31 outsider for the weight-for-age sprint.
