Lucrative Pinhook Results for Astute Ready to Run Vendors

Media Release - Thursday July 28

Year after year New Zealand Bloodstock’s Ready to Run Sale continues to be the world’s leading Breeze Up Sale, held in the highest regard by many trainers, agents and buyers globally.

A trusted source for both domestic and international industry participants, graduates of NZB’s Ready to Run Sale have won more Group One races in the current five seasons than any other two-year-old Breeze Up Sale worldwide.

Not only does the Sale achieve outstanding results on the turf for its buyers, but keen pinhookers who are willing to invest their quality stock are duly rewarded in the sale ring too.

Pinhooked yearling and weanling purchases secured from Karaka, gavelhouse.com and further afield fetched significantly higher prices during the last two editions of the Ready to Run Sale, despite no international buyers on the grounds.

This Pierro 2YO was a big pinhook winner last year.

Last year’s highlight pinhook result was achieved when Riversley Park realised an eye-watering $625,000 for Lot 195, a Pierro colt out of Mary Lou (Fastnet Rock) whom they had purchased offshore for A$150,000. The colt was secured by the Australian partnership of Busuttin Racing, Group 1 Bloodstock and Ozzie Kheir.

While in 2020, a Sacred Falls (NZ) colt out of Savabeel Star (NZ) (Savabeel) fetched a significantly high price tag of $525,000 after he was purchased by kiwi trainer Graham Richardson on behalf of a Hong Kong-based client. Lot 54 was offered by preparer Finbarr Leahy and consigned by Riversely Park, with Leahy having secured him for $80,000 as a yearling at Karaka 2020 before entering him into the Ready to Run Sale.

In 2021 Ohukia Lodge offered Lot 73 another Sacred Falls colt out of Savabeel mare Cheryl Moana Marie (NZ) after purchasing him from NZB’s 2021 National Online Yearling Sale for just $30,000. The colt caught the eye of Busuttin Racing and Group 1 Bloodstock at the 2021 Ready to Run Sale, with the partnership purchasing him for a healthy $300,000.

Also offered that year was Lot 120, a Reliable Man gelding out of Zabeel (NZ) mare Ziffel (NZ) prepared by Roysyn Stables. He was knocked down to the bid of Hong Kong trainer Francis Lui for $230,000, after the Royson Stables purchased him for a mere $5,100 from gavelhouse.com.

Because of its unrivalled reputation, buyers flock digitally and physically to NZB’s Ready to Run Sale, with a number of top New Zealand vendors investing in a premium level of stock and enjoying profitable rewards.

NZB Bloodstock Executive Kane Jones commented on the Ready to Run Sale format.

“It’s no secret that our Ready to Run Sale is the number one sale of its kind and the incredible results our graduates achieve is a testament to the outstanding education and preparation process carried out by our world-class kiwi vendors.”

“We have a number of active and astute pinhookers who specifically target this Sale with their quality stock and are usually rewarded very well for their efforts.

“The last two years have been testing with border closures and COVID restrictions but despite this, the Sale has help up remarkably well.

“Demand for our stock continued to skyrocket with the 2021 Sale record-breaking average of $121,580 resulting in a 28% increase on the 2020 edition and clearing 33% more than both Australian competitor sales averages combined last year.”

“Continuing to achieve results like these in testing circumstances has us incredibly excited for this year’s edition, which should see international buyers return to our grounds and our sale operate successfully in a hybrid auction format,” Jones said.

Entries for the Sale are open now and close at 5PM on Friday 5 August. To nominate your two-year-olds for the 2022 Ready to Run Sale, visit NZB’s online portal at portal.nzb.co.nz.
