Maurice (JPN) Colt Champion Stakes Bound

Mark Smith - Wednesday September 15

Trainer Anthony Cummings has pencilled in the Group 1 Champion Stakes for Moridan after the son of Maurice (JPN) broke his maiden over 1400m at Randwick-Kensington on Wednesday.

Moridan travelled sweetly in fourth place under Jason Collett as You Are Persistent took up the running.

Allowed to stride up three deep on the turn, the 3yo son of Maurice (JPN) quicked impressively. He defeated the first starter Antonio Giovanni (All Too Hard), a half-brother to Group 1 winners Press statement and Pressday, by a length, with Mikasa (Maurice) a further one and three-quarters back in third.

It was the second start for Moridan, who had debuted with a third behind the Redoute’s Choice gelding Ma And Pa at Hawkesbury on August 31.

ings said he had picked out Moridan on a trip to Arrowfield Stud.

“When Arrowfield withdrew their Easter draft due to covid, we went to Arrowfield to see about sixty or eighty horses, and he was my pick,” Cummings said.

“We sat down had a cup of tea, I think there was a beer attached to it, worked out a deal and put it together. So it was a job well done, as it turned out.

“He is a nice horse. After you have been doing it a long time, the good ones stick out.

“He has a nice future. Our aim this time will be the Champion Stakes. After today we are still on track for that. Exactly how we get there, I am not sure yet.”

Moridan is the second winner from as many to race out of the unraced Dansili mare Vadaiyma (FR).

A daughter of the Group 1 Longchamp Prix Saint-Alary winner vadawina (Unfuwain), Vadaiyma (FR) is a three-quarter sister to Group 1 Longchamp Poule d'Essai des Pouliches runner-up Veda (Dansili), and a half-sister to Group II winner Vadamar (Dalakhani), Group III winner The Pentagon (Galileo) and the Listed winner Vedouma (Dalakhani).

The family has also been making news for producing an exciting new stakes-winner for Churchill (IRE) in Aga Khan homebred colt Vadeni, read about him here.

Vadaiyma (FR) was exported to Japan in 2019, where she was covered by Heart’s Cry (JPN).
