UK Group Two Winner for Lonhro
Tara Madgwick - Friday, 14 July 2017
A last start third in the Group II Norfolk Stakes at Royal Ascot, Lonhro colt Cardsharp upped the ante from that good effort to win the Group II July Stakes at Newmarket overnight.

LonhroThe Mark Johnston trained colt raced up on the pace and kicked away to win the six furlong sprint by a length and three-quarters with Royal Ascot Group II Coventry Stakes winner Rajasinghe (Choisir) in third place.

Cardsharp has had a busy season to date with three wins and two placings from six starts.

"We have been chopping and changing with the trip with Cardsharp," said Mark Johnston.

"When we went to Beverley he showed so much speed that's what made us go for the Norfolk as we were originally going for the Coventry. We've seen today he was better for the six furlongs and he certainly wasn't stopping at the end. I wouldn't rule out seeing him over further later in the season."

Bred by Godolphin and raced by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Maktoum, Cardsharp is the best of four winners from Pure Illusion, a Danehill daughter of Group III winner Saintly Speech.

Cardsharp is the 67th stakes-winner for Darley's champion sire Lonhro, who stands at a fee of $66,000 this spring.
