First Winner for Dawn Approach
Mark Smith - Sunday, 2 July 2017

Placed at three of his previous four starts, including a third in the Listed National Stakes at Sandown, the James Tate-trained colt Haddaf broke his maiden in impressive fashion at Newcastle on Saturday to claim the distinction of being the first winner for Darley shuttler Dawn Approach (IRE).

Sent off an odds-on favourite under Martin Harley, Haddaf raced on the pace before drawing away in the straight to defeat Lyrical Pursuit (Poet's Voice) by four lengths with Begging Bowl (Pastoral Pursuits) a short-head back in third.

Bred by Rabbah Bloodstock, Haddaf was an 85,000 guineas purchase at the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale.

He is a half-brother to Listed Fleur de Lys Stakes winner Lamar (Cape Cross), out of the Cozzene mare Deveron who placed third in the Group 1 Prix Marcel Boussac.

The undefeated European Champion juvenile of his year, Dawn Approach will have his first southern hemisphere crop on the track in the new season.

The 4-time Group I winning son of New Approach stands at Kelvinside, NSW in 2017 at a fee of $22,000 inc GST.
