Regally bred Ocean Jewel lived up to her
pedigree when she made a winning debut in Wednesday's Ascend Sales Trophies
Handicap (1200m) at Belmont Park in Perth.
The Simon Miller-trained two-year-old, who started a $1.40 favourite, charged
home to score by 1 1⁄2 lengths for jockey Joseph Azzopardi.
"She'll be set for Ascot carnival races," said Miller's racing manager Kyle
Nowland. "We gave her time to mature before racing and she's got a lot of
potential."
Ocean Jewel is from the first crop of Cox Plate hero Ocean Park, who stands at
Waikato Stud.
The filly's dam Markisa, by champion sire Danehill, is a three-quarter sister
to prominent stallions Commands and Danewin.
Ocean Jewel is also closely related to former star Octagonal.
"Shin-soreness was a problem for Ocean Jewel," Nowland said. "She's now got no
troubles, but her current campaign will be brief. We'll aim her for the
carnival." - NZ Racing Desk
