Scarlet Billows Tops Great Southern on Day Three

Group 3 winner Scarlet Billows sold for $460,000 on Day 3 of the Melbourne Great Southern Sale, headlining a strong session of broodmares to go through the Oaklands ring.

Scarlet BillowsOffered by John Richards of Galadi Holdings, the retireddaughter of Street Boss and Hushabye Baby (Lot 497)was purchased by Damon Gabbedy of Belmont Bloodstock, for a client.

The mare will be sent to Woodside Park's newest shuttle stallion Cable Bay.

Scarlet Billows became the highest priced mare purchased at the Great Southern Sale since David O'Callaghan paid $625,000 for Written Tycoon in 2009.

Other leading lots on Day 3 included:

*Belmont Bloodstock paying $270,000 for Black-type winnerGolden Penny (Lot 678), offered by Supreme Thoroughbreds in foal to Written Tycoon

*Seven-time winnerFine Mist (Lot 880), offered by Lang Brothers Racing and purchased by Kirkby-Miller Holdings for $160,000

*Encosta De Lago mareAl Afraah (Lot 563), which was bought by Sheamus Mills Bloodstock from Stonehouse Thoroughbreds for $160,000

Damon Gabbedy described Scarlet Billows as "a smart purchase''.

"This year's broodmare sales results told us that young Group-winning mares are very hard to find, and in Scarlet Billows I think the new owners have found a fantastic prospect,'' Gabbedy said.

"She's a tough, sound, Group-winning mare which really ticks all the boxes.''

Inglis' Victorian Bloodstock Manager Simon Vivian was thrilled with the top end of the market especially.

"Scarlet Billows was a massive result and we're so pleased for John Richards. We greatly appreciate his support and we're thrilled with the result we were able to achieve for him,'' Vivian said.

The fourth and final day of the 2017 Melbourne Great Southern Sale begins at 11am tomorrow, Wednesday June 21.

On offer will be a mix of yearlings, racing stock and unbroken stock.
