Rising
staying star Red Cardinal won the $400,000 Grade III Belmont Gold Cup
Invitational in the US on Friday for astute Aussie syndicators Australian
Bloodstock.
Lightly raced, but never off the board in his career, Red Cardinal began his
career in Great Britain with David Simcock, and was purchased privately by Luke
Murrell and Jamie Lovett's Australian Bloodstock.
Third in the Group III Geoffrey Freer Stakes last year for his new owners, he was
subsequently sent to Germany's Andreas Wohler to finish a close second in the
Group I Preis von Europa in September.
A last start winner of the Group II Hoppegarten Oleander-Rennen May 14, the son
of Montjeu relished his first attempt at the two mile trip to score a neck win
in the prestigious US turf staying event.
"He started very late in his career and hasn't had many races and keeps
improving," said Wohler, who won the 2015 Melbourne Cup for Australian
Bloodstock with Protectionist.
"He's progressing and we're quite happy with where he is right now. Red Cardinal's long-term goal will be the
G1 Melbourne Cup Nov. 7.
"He'll probably have his next race in France. He then could race in Germany or
in Australia itself. We want to give him a little break before he comes back.
He'll be fresh for the campaign then."
