One to Watch – Kembla

Tara Madgwick - Tuesday May 23
Spendthrift Australia have invested heavily in Australian bloodstock in recent years and this blue-blooded colt by champion sire Street Cry (IRE) became their latest winner when saluting at Kembla on Tuesday.

Hulalai - Gai Waterhouse TwitterTwo year-old Hualalai has been somewhat of a problem child for the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott stable, but showed he may now have turned the corner.

An impressive trial winner back in December, Hualalai was being touted as a possible Magic Millions and Golden Slipper contender before making his debut on Boxing Day.

Sent out a hot favourite at Randwick, he disappointed to finish second last behind subsequent stakes-winner One More Honey and then was beaten five lengths behind star colts Pariah and Menari when fifth in the Group III ATC Canonbury Stakes.

Spelled immediately after, Hualalai was given an easier task when resuming from a spell in the 1200 metre juvenile maiden and scored a long neck win as favourite.

His ability has never been in question and with this confidence building win under his belt, Hualalai is an obvious horse to follow with Waterhouse TweetingA talented colt with plenty of upside .

A $625,000 Magic Millions purchase for Spendthrift Australia from the Baramul Stud draft, Hualalai is the second winner for Group I ATC Coolmore Classic winner Aloha, who comes from the family of current season Group I winner Malaguerra.

Aloha produced a filly last spring by I am Invincible and is in foal to Sebring.
