One
of the most consistent mares in training, Ron Quinton's Daysee Doom scored a
well-deserved first Black Type success in the $200,000 Group III Dark Jewel
Quality at Scone on Saturday.
Placed in Group races at three of her past four starts and a brave fourth in the
Group I ATC Coolmore Classic, the daughter of Aquis Farm's Domesday at last found
her time to shine.
Sent out favourite for the 1400 metre sprint, she fought tenaciously to the
line for apprentice rider Andrew Adkins to claim a long head win.
"You've got to give these kids the chance," Quinton said. "They
can't win these races if they're sitting in the jockeys' room.
"I've always been one to support them in these races as well. It's a great
thrill for me and him and everyone concerned."
Adkins was grateful for the opportunity given to him by Quinton and the
connections of Daysee Doom(image Steve Hart) .
"I just can't thank the owners enough for sticking by me," Adkins
said. "Every run to be back on top.
"Ron and everyone in the stables. I'm just so grateful.
"It's a big thing for a trainer to put an apprentice on when you can't
claim in a race. Especially to be a Group III.
"It's pretty special and I'm pretty excited."
Quinton suggested he is likely to give Daysee Doom a break now before coming
back for the spring although admitted the Queensland winter carnival was still
a possibility.
Retained to race by her breeders, Daysee Doom has the impressive record of six
wins from 12 starts with prizemoney topping $420,000.
She is the only foal from stakes-placed Mister C (USA) mare See a Victory, who
comes from the family of stakes-winners Cooldini and Correct Amoondo.
Daysee Doom is the 14th stakes-winner Domesday, who also sired
classy three year-old Ruthven to finish a gallant half length second in the
Group I SAJC South Australian Derby.
Another of his offspring, four year-old gelding Emphasis also gained Black Type
finishing second in the Listed BRC Singapore Members Handicap and has won over
$230,000 in prizemoney.
A wonderfully versatile and consistent sire, Domesday stands at a fee of $8,800
and is completely free of Danzig blood.
