High Chaparral Filly Impresses on Debut

Mark Smith - Tuesday April 25

Ingham Racing's homebred High Low Bet made a winning career debut in Anzac Day's Passchendaele Plate (1200m) at Randwick and it had special significance for trainer Chris Waller.

"She's a well-bred filly, one that the Ingham's bred themselves, as they have done for the past couple of seasons, (her dam We Betcha) was actually the first winner I had for the Ingham family, so a pretty special win and good to see a nice one left by We Betcha," Waller said

Ridden by Brenton Avdulla, High Low Bet drifted to the outside fence, nosing out the game Casino Prince filly Fifth Affair.

Sebring filly Grand Theft Auto Grand ran home strongly, finishing one and a half lengths back in third.

"Good gutsy effort, she has a pretty bright future," Waller said.

"She is a daughter of High Chaparral who is a great stallion. Just give them a bit of time but it's good to give your two-year olds a run at the end of the season to prepare them for their three-year-old year.

"We only intended to give her one run and put her out. We will see how she comes out of the race."

High Low Bet is the second foal of the Encosta de Lago mare We Betcha who was purchased by the Inghams for $600,000 at the 2008 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling sale.

A daughter of the dual Group II winner Wager (Flying Spur), We Betcha won five and placed in nine of her 38 starts with earnings of $335,370.

She was only asked to tackle stakes company twice, both early in her career.

At two she finished seventh in the Black Opal Stakes after winning on debut at Canterbury, then at her second start at three when unplaced in the Silver Shadow Stakes.

The first foal of We Betcha, the So You Think colt Betcha Thinking, broke his maiden at Canterbury in November before being sent for a spell.

The daughter of Encosta de Lago has a yearling colt by Pierro and a weanling filly by Uncle Mo (USA). She was bred back to Starspangledbanner last spring.

The deceased High Chaparral (pictured) is not just having a banner year with his older horses, led by the recent Group I winner Tivaci, the son of Sadler's Wells is having his best year with his two-year-old since moving to Australia from New Zealand.

High Low Bet is his fifth juvenile winner of the season, which are led by Listed Fernhill Handicap winner and Group I Champagne Stakes third Whispered Secret.
