Excelebration Makes News

Tara Madgwick - Sunday April 23
Coolmore shuttler Excelebration (IRE) made news in the UK on Saturday when his up and coming colt Barney Roy captured the Group III Greenham Stakes at Newbury for Godolphin, while he was also represented by an Australian bred juvenile winner in South Africa.

Barney Roy won on debut at Haydock last year and was subsequently purchased by Godolphin.

Trained by Richard Hannon and ridden by James Doyle, Barney Roy powered clear of Frankel colt Dream Castle to win the seven furlong contest by two lengths.

"We've always liked Barney Roy and there's a big chance he'll go to the Guineas," said Richard Hannon. "I think he'll get further too and he's very exciting.

"He's always looked a bit different, the way he moves, canters. He might even get a Derby trip the way he relaxes now."

ExcelebrationBred by Eliza Park Intarnational (now Sun Stud), Barney Roy is the first winner for Galileo mare Alina, a daughter of Group III winner Cheyenne Star.

Opening his account at Kenilworth in South Africa on Saturday was two year-old Excelebration (IRE) colt Phelan Lucky.

Prepared by Brett Crawford, he showed the benefit of race experience to score a half length win over 1400 metres.

Phelan Lucky was a $40,000 Magic Millions Perth purchase for Paul Lafferty from the Gold Front Thoroughbreds draft and is a half-brother to stakes-placed Lady Dynamo from Governing Spirit.

He is the second Australian bred winner for Exceed and Excel's Group I winning son Excelebration, who is not slated to return to the Hunter Valley this year.
