Million Dollar Mares Highlight Chairman's Sale Success

Media Release - Saturday April 8

The inaugural Chairman's Sale proved unequivocally it has a permanent home in the Australian marketplace as tonight's Session II (Elite Breeding Prospects) continued a stunning week of action at Newmarket.

In what can only be described as a spectacular success, three Lots sold tonight for $1million or more with a further 11 in the $500,000 - $999,999 range.

The sale ended with an average of $329,786, Median of $265,000, Gross of $23,085,000 and an 86% Clearance Rate.

It comes less than a week after Session I (Elite Racing Prospects) which was also an outstanding success, highlighted by the sales of unbeaten 2YO Gunnison for $1,400,000 and Stakes-placed juvenile Eden Roc for $900,000.

Victorian stud Three Bridges was active as both a buyer and vendor at the top end of the market tonight.

It bought the sale-topper (above)  Provocative in foal to Tavistock(with its agent Paul Willetts Bloodstock Consultancy) for $1.2million and offered the second-top (belowLot Don't Doubt Mamma(as agent), which Arrowfield paid $1.1million for.

Three Bridges' Peter Liston was thrilled on both accounts.

"We sold a princess and bought a queen,'' Liston said.

"Provocative is a young Group 1-winning Zabeel mare on its first foal and we think over her life she'll be one of the foundation mares of our stud and hopefully our success going forward.

"And Don't Doubt Mamma was a great result for our clients and I'm so pleased for them that they got the price they were after and they entrusted us with achieving that for them.

"The longer we've been here at Newmarket this week, the more confident we'd become that she might have made the million dollars but to make over it is fantastic.''

Don't Doubt Mamma, which was purchased on behalf of Katsumi Yoshida, will likely go to Arrowfield's recent Japanese stallion acquisition Maurice this season, according to the stud's Jon Freyer.

"It's a family that we love and she's by Not A Single Doubt who has started nicely as a broodmare sire,'' Freyer said.

"It's so hard to buy fillies in that family, let alone Group winners. We thought she was an outstanding physical and a filly that was unlucky in a few of the bigger races.''

Newstar Partnership, a union formed only today between Newgate, WinStar and Kingstar Farms, paid $1million forFlame Of Sydney (Lot 51), the dam of recent Group 1 Inglis Sires winner Invader and star Australian and Hong Kong sprinter Not Listenin'tome.

Newstar Partnerships were also leading buyer with eight Lots.

Flame Of Sydney will likely be mated with Newgate's recent stallion addition Capitalist this season.

"She's got all the attributes of a blue hen mare and I thought she was fabulous buying at $1 million on a global scale,'' Newstar Partnership's Henry Field said.

"She is a relatively young mare for what she's done and not many 13YO mares have produced two real horses, so we're very happy to buy her.''

Inglis Managing Director Mark Webster was in awe of the support and success of the inaugural The Chairman's Sale.

"You can't progress without innovation and it's been proven with both the Elite Racing Prospects last week and now tonight's Elite Breeding Prospects session, that this type of sale absolutely belongs in the Australian market,'' Webster said.

"It's impossible to do new things well without the support of the core players so a big thankyou to all the vendors who supported this concept with us and I'm thrilled the results have been there for them with this new initiative.

"It's clearly the right time of year to be selling elite broodmares and weanlings and that sets us up nicely for next week.''

The curtain comes down on Newmarket next week with the last ever sale at the iconic venue, the Australian Broodmare & Weanling Sale.

The sale starts Monday at 1pm and runs for three days, where a catalogue of over 550 quality weanlings, race fillies and broodmares will be offered.
