Street Cry - whose name has been in the headlines with the amazing deeds of his
superstar daughter Winx - Wolf Cry is a horse Larneuk's Neville Murdoch has
been chasing for some time."He ticks all the boxes," he enthused.
"He is a magnificent type who is bound to impress all who see him, he has a great pedigree from a family well known to Victorian breeders and he had plenty of natural ability."
Catching James Bester's eye at the 2014 Magic Millions where he was secured for $320,000 (the fifth highest priced Street Cry colt that year), Wolf Cry headed to the stables of Peter and Paul Snowden.
Showing early toe, Wolf Cry contested the first two-year-old stakes race for the season, the Listed Breeders Plate at Randwick in early October. He finished a pleasing third behind the subsequent Golden Slipper winner Vancouver. On proving himself a serious horse he was turned out.
Next seen in mid-February, Wolf Cry was straight back into strong company in the Listed Lonhro Stakes at Randwick. He sat wide but was a game third, less than a length from the winner and on the strength of that run he was sent out second favourite in the Gr.2 Skyline Stakes where he unfortunately found trouble. But like all good horses fought hard and was still gallant finishing third to future Gr.1 winner Exosphere.
After contesting the Gr. 3 TL Baillieu Handicap Wolf Cry had a well-earned extended break.
Spelling well, he returned as a short priced favourite in Australia's richest maiden – the 1200m contest at the Gold Coast on Magic Millions Day. Despite getting a bit stirred up pre-race having cast a shoe at the gates, Wolf Cry was able to dash clear from the 150m, proving a class above his rivals with his soft three length victory... recording a faster time than that of Capitalist winning the Magic Millions 2Y0 Classic later that day.
"It's not ideal to be replated behind the gates because he is a colt and he is very full of himself," Peter Snowden said, "but the result was great and it was good to see him win as well as he did. The form was there to say that he had good ability and he's come back really well."
Jockey Blake Shinn was impressed - "he had a bit on them. He is going to get a mile and win much better races."
Wolf Cry's pedigree is one of great appeal. His sire Street Cry has been an international sensation represented by 110 stakes winners, 20 of whom are Group One winners including Winx, Zenyatta, Whobegotyou and Pride Of Dubai.
Already his sons are proving their worth at stud, Per Incanto, Shocking, Street Boss and Street Sense all siring Group One winners.
Bred on the same highly successful Street Cry/Danehill cross as the big race winners Shocking, Pride Of Dubai, Hallowed Crown, Stay With Me and Politeness, Wolf Cry is out of Starfish, a regally bred daughter of champion stallion Redoute's Choice.
Not only is Redoute's Choice - sire of 143 stakes winners (including 30 Group One winners) doing a great job as a broodmare sire with 54 stakes winners, he is faring exceptionally well with Street Cry.
Street Cry has had 19 runners out of Redoute's Choice mares, 17 of whom - a whopping 89.4% - are winners including 1000 Guineas heroine Stay With Me, two other stakes winners and five stakes placed; an outstanding 42% black type ratio!
Wolf Cry's dam is the talented race mare Starfish. Runner up in the Listed Maribyrnong Trial Stakes at her two-year-old debut, the Gr.3 placed metropolitan winner has been doing the job at stud with all three of her runners to date being winners.
The two times stakes placed dual city winner Glenbawn Dame is another of her's and the best may still be to come with her $500,000 Medaglia d'Oro colt Equus D'Oro a member of the Snowden stable.
Starfish is a daughter of the Group One sprinting mare Stella Cadente, dam of three black type performers including the juvenile stakes winner Brilliant Bisc. Her stakes placed daughter Moon Fever has produced the Hong Kong Gr.3 winner Dashing Fellow and the dual Listed winner Aeronautical.
Meanwhile Stella Cadente's unraced son Redente, a full brother to Starfish, has been doing a great job at stud.
This is one of Australia's favourite families, one that has also produced the Golden Slipper heroine Bint Marscay, the Epsom Handicap/Caulfield Stakes winner Filante, the Coolmore Classic winner Bollinger, the VRC Derby winner Benicio and the Australian Guineas winner Kenny's Best Pal.
Wolf Cry's pedigree page is one full of black type, his other relations including the stakes winners Eau D'Scay, Sheraton, Always Allison, Romneya, Friesan Fire and At The Oasis.
Wolf Cry makes his stud debut at a fee of $4400 (incl gst) with Neville Murdoch confident that he will be of great appeal to broodmare owners.
