Victory for Perserverence

Mark Smith - Sunday April 2

A fourth generation homebred, Waking Moment answered Wally Sexton's prayers when the daughter of Epsom Derby winner Authorized (IRE) broke her maiden in Saturday's Group III Adrian Knox Stakes (2000m) at Randwick.

The Sexton family connection goes back to Waking Moment's great-great granddam Jago's Ace (Bellissimo) and this is the first piece of black-type on the pedigree page.

It took four starts for Waking Moment to break her maiden. She had been well fancied to win a 1600 maiden at Kembla Grange at her previous start but finished a disappointing seventh.

Thompson said he would wait before committing to a start in the Group I Australian Oaks (2400m) next Saturday.

"See how she pulls up. There is that option or Queensland. I think the horse will probably tell us," Thompson said.

"She is a horse on the way up. The more ground she gets the better she'll get.

"She went to Kembla over a mile last start and she was a bit fresh and over-raced but Jason (Collett) put her to sleep today."

Waking Moment is the second foal of the winning Dangerous mare Try This who died in 2015.

She had a 2yo colt by Myboycharlie (IRE) that made $30,000 at the 2016 Inglis Classic Yearling sale. Her final foal is a yearling filly by Arlington.

Waking Moment comes from the fourth and final Australian conceived crop of Authorized and becomes the 30th stakes winner for the triple Group I winning son of Montjeu.
