Are jockeys good judges? Let’s put it to the test

Clinton Payne - Thursday March 30

To the eye horses don't win any more impressively that High Impulse did last start but experienced jockey Glyn Schofield has passed up the ride in favour for the stablemate Mull Over in Saturday's $200,000 Group III Adrian Knox Stakes (2000m) at Randwick.

In fairness, Mull Over herself did the job in fine style when beating another of Saturday's rivals Matron Wilson by 3-1/4 lengths at her last start in a set weights maiden over 1600 metres at Newcastle on March 17.

"They both come out of provincial set weight maiden wins rated (benchmark) 64 and they profile exactly the same," trainer James Cummings said.

"Both fillies were impressive winning their last starts."

High Impulse, a daughter of High Chaparral, went to a new level last start when stepping out over 1800 metres at Hawkesbury and scoring a 5-1/4 length victory but since that win it hasn't all gone according to the trainer's plan.

"She's had the blinkers go on third-up and Glyn said if he had have held on any tighter the breast plate would have broken – she exploded," Cummings said.

"I have to say I'm disappointed I wasn't able to get the 1400 metre race into her at Warwick Farm last week but after that was abandoned we were able to get a 1200 metre (1175m) trial into her to offset it as best I could.

"She's a developing filly with a lot of scope and her work on Tuesday was superior to what she did going into her win at Hawkesbury.

"She's handled a heavy track previously and Saturday will give me a very good line on her."

Mull Over on the other hand hasn't missed a beat this prep and heads into Saturday's Australian Oaks lead-up in great order.

"She showed me as much, if not even a little bit more class when she won at Newcastle," Cummings said.

"It was probably a stronger race and she's two weeks into this off a mile win and is fourth-up.

"It's lovely for the stable to have a promising horse by So You Think."

Schofield described the decision to pick Mull Over as his Adrian Knox mount as "mission impossible" because "both fillies were pretty impressive" winning their last starts.

"It was a toss of the coin job," Schofield said.

With time between runs, my filly has had the ideal prep so I've gone with the So You Think filly.

"Not a lot went right for her early in the run but when she found cover and raced tractably she exploded away to win comfortably."

Mull Over is a $5.50 chance with High Impulse at $7. Brenton Avdulla rides High Impulse.
