The
hot run being enjoyed by Darley shuttler Teofilo (IRE) extended to South Africa
on Saturday where his progressive four year-old Brazuca took out the Group II
Colorado King Stakes at Turffontein.
The Johan Janse van Vuuren trained entire had been Group I placed on five occasions
but amazingly had not won a stakes race until Saturday.
He corrected that anomaly when racing away to win the 2000 metre feature by
three lengths, his fifth win from 14 starts.
An $80,000 Inglis Premier purchase from the draft of Kia Ora Stud, Brazuca was
bred by Wall Street Thoroughbreds and is a half-brother to stakes-winner Mr
Utopia and is one of five winners from Base Paradise, a daughter of Magic
Millions 2YO Classic winner Catnipped.
The current yearling from Base Paradise, a colt by Stratum, made $240,000 at
Inglis Premier this year for Vinery when purchased by Global.
Base Paradise produced a More Than Ready (USA) filly last spring and was then
covered again by Teofilo, who has enjoyed much success in recent weeks as the
sire of Humidor, Happy Clapper and Palentino.
Brazuca is the 63rd stakes-winner worldwide for Teofilo and looms as a future Group I winner.
