Bowness Bred and Sold Filly Wins Wellington Boot

Tara Madgwick - Sunday March 12
A $50,000 Magic Millions Yearling Sale purchase from the Bowness Stud draft, I Am Invincible filly Lucy Rose scored a bold front running win in the $100,000 Wellington Boot on Sunday.

Trained at Queanbeyan by Joe Cleary, Lucy Rose was a winner on debut at Canberra last year and was then sixth when resuming from a spell in a strong race at Canberra won by subsequent Group II winner Gunnison.

She made light work of her outside gate to take the lead for Matthew Cahill and was too strong to the line in winning the 1100 metre dash by three-quarters of a length, staying out of all the trouble that unfolded behind her.

The first incident occurred shortly after the start when Dragoneight began to pigroot and buck itself out of contention and then Shudabeen decided to start bucking and dumped Winona Costin on her back before Harmonic Lass suffered a fatal breakdown passing the 700m.

"Joe (Cleary) wanted me to ride her aggressively and go forward from the barrier, he said she was very fit and we went quick," Cahill said.

"We got there pretty easily and then backed off a bit before the turn. The last 100(m) she was probably feeling it a bit but she'd done enough."

Lucy Rose as a yearlingBred and sold by Bowness Stud, Lucy Rose is a half-sister to Singapore stakes-winner Royal Smile and is the fourth and final winner from Lucy's Loot , who died in 2014.

Bowness Stud have hit a purple patch with their two year-olds having also raised Group III Canberra Black Opal winner Trapeze Artist for his owner Bert Vieira.

The Bowness Stud team are in Adelaide this week for the Magic Millions Yearling Sale with a diverse draft of 26 youngsters, click here to see them.
