Nicconi Colt Wins Sires Produce

Tara Madgwick - Saturday March 11
The most popular sire in Australia for 2016 covering 226 mares, Widden Stud's Nicconi featured with a new stakes-winner at Flemington on Saturday when two year-old colt Sircconi scored a bold front running win in the Group II VRC Sires Produce Stakes.

Prepared by Peter Morgan and ridden by Linda Meech, Sircconi was second at Sandown at his first run back from a break having finished sixth on debut at Moonee Valley back in November.

Up in class and up in distance, Sircconi (pictured Grant Courtney) relished the challenge, leading all the way and fighting off the challengers to win the 1400 metre contest by a short half head over spring stakes-winner Aspect.

"He has no turn of foot, but he has a high cruising speed and has the best attitude," said Linda Meech.

"I'm just so excited about him for the spring when we can get him up to 2000 metres."

Sircconi as a yearlingSircconi was an $80,000 Inglis Classic purchase for his trainer from the Bhima Thoroughbreds draft and was a successful pinhook having been bought first at the Magic Millions National Weanling Sale for $25,000.

"It was a great ride as she (Linda) let him wind up slowly, so I thought he might get away with it," Morgan said.

"I think ultimately he's a 2000 metre horse in the spring.

"He's fit and well, so we may press on to Sydney."

Bred by Access Bloodstock, Sircconi is the second winner from Kiwi bred mare On Credit, who comes from a stout New Zealand family as her grand-dam is Group III winning Noble Bijou (USA) mare The Dimple.

It's the family of Group I winner Irish Chance and The Jewel as well as current Group I star La Bella Diosa.

On Credit has a yearling filly by Sizzling, a weanling filly by Eurozone and is now in foal to Aquis Farm's Domesday.
