NZB South Island Catalogue Available Now Online

Media Release - Wednesday March 1

The catalogue for New Zealand Bloodstock's South Island Sale will be landing in letterboxes soon.

And can be viewed online now

The Sale will be held at the Riding for the Disabled Building at the Canterbury Agricultural Park in Christchurch on 21 April 2017, commences from Lot 1 at 11am. This year's catalogue is made up almost entirely of yearlings, accounting for 101 of the 104 lots catalogued. There are also two two-year-olds and one racehorse.

An added benefit of the inclusion of the South Island Session in the National Yearling Sale Series is that any yearling purchased is eligible to enter the lucrative Karaka Million Series, including the $1m Karaka Million in 2018, the $1m Karaka Million 3YO Classic in 2019, and the $100,000 Karaka Stayers Cup from 2018 and then for the duration of their racing careers.

South Island Sale graduates have enjoyed great racetrack success in the last few weeks, headed by the impressive win by Signify (NZ) (Perfectly Ready) in the Group 1 Telegraph (1200m) at Trentham. Parthesia (NZ) (Raise The Flag) recently won the Listed Tasmanian Oaks (2100m).

Natuzzi (NZ) (Coats Choice) also continues to feature as a successful graduate of the South Island Sale. He has won 11 races, six at Group or Listed level, and his runner-up finish in the NRM Sprint in early February was the fifth time he has placed in a Group 1 race. He has earned $557,542 in prize-money, which is more than 60 times his $9,000 purchase price.

Perennial leading vendors White Robe Lodge claimed top honours again at last year's record-breaking Sale, selling 15 horses for a total of $394,000 including the $52,500 sale-topper by Raise The Flag out of Legal Note.

They could face stiff opposition this year from Berkley Stud, who finished second in last year's vendor rankings with an aggregate of $274,000. This year they will offer 17 horses, one more than White Robe Lodge's 16.

There are a total of 25 vendors at this year's Sale, with other sizeable drafts including Pear Tree Agistment Farm (11), Three Valleys (8) and Willow Glen (8).

A range of 38 sires are represented by their yearling progeny, including Inglewood Stud's Zacinto who sired this season's Group 1 New Zealand 2000 Guineas winner Ugo Foscolo (NZ). Zacinto has 11 yearlings in the catalogue.

Fellow resident South Island sire Highly Recommended has the largest draft of 19 yearlings, while Raise The Flag has 8 and Gallant Guru 6.

Leading New Zealand sires Tavistock (1), Darci Brahma (1), Iffraaj (1), Pins (1), Pentire (1), Power (1) and Showcasing (2) are represented by progeny at the Sale.

The New Zealand Thoroughbred Breeders' Association; Canterbury Westland, Marlborough, Otago Branch warmly invite you for complimentary drinks and nibbles from 5pm on Thursday 20 April 2017, at the RDA Building, Canterbury Agricultural Park.

The South Island Sale commences at 11am on Friday 21 April.
