Duporth's Hey Doc Targets Australian Guineas

Mark Smith - Saturday February 18

With the Inglis Premier Yearling sale just over a week away, one of the sales recent graduates Hey Doc was back to his brilliant best in Saturday's $150,000 Group III CS Hayes Stakes (1400m) at Flemington.

A veteran of just 11 starts, the Tony McEvoy trained gelding has been a model of consistency with 5 wins, 1 second and 2 thirds with earnings of $514,900.

The 3yo son of Duporth earned a shot at next month's Group I Australian Guineas following his one and a half length win under Luke Currie over Malaise (Helmet) with Land Of Plenty (Stratum) a short-neck back in third. (photo Grant Courtney).

Winner of the Group II Stutt Stakes (1600m) at Moonee Valley last September, Hey Doc finished third in the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas won by Divine Prophet.

He returned with a third in the Group III Manfred Stakes (1200m) won by Legless Veuve, which proved the perfect prep for the CS Hayes Stakes.

"He was a beautiful yearling; I bought him at the Melbourne sale here," McEvoy said.

"He's been a very good racehorse for us.

"He's a real, proper 1400 metre horse the way he travelled and quickened today, he really impressed me again," McEvoy said after the win.

"He flew the start and Luke has got a lot of faith in him, he trusts him and rode him beautifully.

"I loved his turn of foot.

"He's got to go to the Guineas on that, we'll try him again at a mile.

"The times that he's been at a mile he hasn't drawn well.

"If he could draw a gate he's got good speed and he can get into a controlling position so we'll go to the Group 1."

An $85,000 Inglis Premier Session II purchase for McEvoy Mitchell Racing from the Rosemont Stud draft, Hey Doc is the second and final foal of Heyington Honey, who died last year.

An Adelaide winner by General Nediym, Heyington Honey comes from the family of Group III winner Excel Pilot.

Hey Doc is the third stakes-winner for Red Ransom's Group I winning son Duporth, who switched from Kitchwin Hills to Jindera Park last year and stands at a fee of $6,600.
