Oaks Goal for Premier Purchase

Tara Madgwick - Saturday February 18
A three-quarter sister to Aquis Farm's popular young sire Spill the Beans, progressive filly Kenedna produced a career best performance in her first run in blinkers to win the Group III VRC The Vanity at Flemington on Saturday.

With minor wins at Geelong and Echuca to her credit, the Darren Weir trained Kenedna was taking a sharp jump in class for this 1400 metre assignment, her first attempt at Black Type.

Kenedna - images Grant CourtneyAllowed to find her feet by Damian Lane, Kenedna found the line with a well timed run to defeat Extra Olives by a length and a half.

"She travelled well in the run and really let rip late," said Damian Lane.

Darren Weir has lofty goals for the daughter of Not a Single Doubt with the Group I SAJC Australasian Oaks (2000m) on May 6 as a likely target.

"She's been crying out for blinkers, but I just had to find the right time to put them on and they;d done the trick," said Weir.

"I like to put them on when they are really fit and ready to go, they can tend to over-race so they need to be rock hard fit.

"She'll run a lot further as she has such a relaxed attitude. The Australasian Oaks is on the radar, so she'd have to get ten furlongs, but she's giving every indication that she might."

An $80,000 Inglis Premier purchase from the Arrowfield draft for Darren Weir/John Foote Bloodstock/ MDR Bloodstock, Kenedna has won three of nine starts earning $138,210.

Kenedna as a yearlingBred and offered for sale by Arrowfield, Kenedna is a three-quarter sister by Not a Single Doubt to Group II winner Spill the Beans and is one of three winners from well related Falbrav (IRE) mare Miss Dodwell.

A minor winner, Miss Dodwell is a half-sister to Group III winner Yammer and stakes-winner Blab, the dam of Group I winner Speak Fondly, while further back in the family are Australian Horse of the Year, Bounding Away, who everything from a Golden Slipper to an AJC Oaks, and Group I winning stayer Glastonbury.

Arrowfield Stud will offer the current yearling from Miss Dodwell, a filly by Smart Missile, at the 2017 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale as Lot 228.

Miss Dodwell has a weanling filly by Spill the Beans sire Snitzel and is back in foal to him again.
