Prepared by Kris Lees, Invincible Gem (image Steve Hart) had won her past two starts at Warwick Farm and Rosehill last month prompting connections to give her a shot at Black Type.
"I said to the owners after her last win that I was looking for a reason to send her out for a break but she's just thrived since and I said we've got to have a throw at the stumps in a stakes race with her," Lees said.
"I was surprised to see her come up favourite but they're better judges than me."
Invincible Gem ultimately justified her short quote as favourite, dispatching her mostly male opposition in the 1600 metre feature under Brenton Avdulla.
The Matthew Smith-trained Group I placed Faraway Town, the only other filly in the race, finished three and three-quarter lengths away in second place.
With four wins from eight starts and prizemoney topping $237,000, Lees admitted
that Invincible Gem may have staved off a spell for at least another start."She's certainly surprised me in the level that she's gone to this preparation – she' a very plain looking little filly," Lees said.
"She's just handled things so well and is testimony to the stallion (I Am Invincible), he just upgrades any mare he goes to."
Retained to race by her breeders, Invincible Gem is the second winner from Diamond Day, a minor winner by Marwina, whose family is barren of Black Type for five generations.
Diamond Day was covered last spring by Kitchwin Hills ill-fated Snitzel Group II winner Time for War.
Invincible Gem is the 19th stakes-winner for Yarraman Park's remarkable stallion I Am Invincible, who is enjoying a benchmark season with progeny earnings topping $7million and eight stakes-winners to his credit.
His winner to runner rate of 52.9% is the best of any commercial sire in the land.
