Final Crop Of Commands On Fire

Mark Smith - Friday February 3

Five days ago Melody Belle catapulted her sire Commands to the top of the 2yo sires rankings in New Zealand with her win in the Karaka Million while at Moonee Valley on Friday night it was the turn of another filly from the final crop of the sadly missed Commands to make a statement.

The Robbie Griffiths first starter Something Violet opened up the outsider of the seven-horse field at $13 before late support saw her priced trimmed to $9.50.

Ryan Maloney made full use of an inside barrier to position the daughter of Commands third on the fence as the favourite Prepare To  Win and From the Clouds cut out the early sectionals.

When From The Clods dropped off it allowed Something Violet to ease to the outside of Prepare To  Win (Bel Esprit) before coming clear to win by three-quarters of a length with Prosecution (Choisir) one and a quarter lengths back in third. (photo Grant Courtney).

"I've done a bit of work on her, she's pretty smart," Maloney said.

We came here tonight confident she's done everything right and she was too strong.

"From day one I've liked her she's done everything we have asked of her.

"I'm not sure if she's Blue Diamond material, I think she's probably got a bit too much speed but we'll assess and go from there."

An $80,000 purchase by her trainer from the Hillside Thoroughbreds draft at the 2016 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale, Something Violet is the eighth foal of the former smart racemare Freestyle (Snippets whose three stakes wins included the Group II SAJC Breeders' Stakes.

Freestyle had been purchased for $43,000 by Hillside bloodstock manager Peter Ford Peter Ford from the Arrowfield draft at the 2012 Inglis Australian Easter Broodmare Sale.

She was carrying the progressive Hong Kong performer House Of Fun at the time of her sale.

The daughter of Snippets has been a reliable producer, missing just once in her first 11 years at stud.

Freestyle has a colt foal by Deep Field and was covered by Not A Single Doubt last spring.
