Camelot Filly Repays Friends

Media Release - Monday January 30
A representative of the first Southern Hemisphere crop of a former champion European colt completed a tidy piece of business for two mates on the opening day at Karaka.

The daughter of Camelot (Lot 5) was offered by Dave and Philippa Duley's Lansdowne Park operation and was sold to Cambridge's Jem Bloodstock, on behalf of a Sydney client, for $180,000.

"We're very happy with that – she was bred by a good friend of mine, John Orr, and I bought her off him as a weanling," Duley said.

"We were hoping to get more than $130,000 so it's a good start to the sale."

The filly's sire Camelot, whose haul of Group One victories included the English and Irish Derbys, divides his time between Coolmore's operations in Ireland and Australia and is a favourite of her breeder Orr.

"I like the stallion and like High Chaparral he couldn't have done much more a racehorse," the Blenheim-based businessman said. "Everybody has got a bit of money out of the filly so it's a great result."

She is the first foal of the Volksraad mare Viana, whose five wins featured the Listed Spring Classic at Riccarton.
