Diversity Breeds Success

Tara Madgwick - Wednesday January 25
The recent Magic Millions Yearling Sale highlighted the success of breeders presenting diversity in their product and the sourcing of high quality international mares from France through the ARQANA Breeding Stock Sale yielded some impressive results.

It's no secret that we have some of the best stallions in the world right here in Australia, but mating to them can be tricky if you wish to avoid an overload of speed and the widely perceived problematic doubling up of Danehill blood.

One of the obvious solutions to the dilemma is to source quality mares from the Northern Hemisphere and the following results show ARQANA is a great place for the savvy Australian breeder to start that search.

Lot 201 – Filly Zoustar x Mandawara (Fr), Consigned by Glenlogan Park – sold for $400,000 to Ciaron Maher.

A half-sister to triple Australian Group I winner Manighar (Fr), Mandawara was bought by Neil Jenkinson for €30,000 at the 2010 ARQANA Breeding Stock sale and has already proved a resounding success having produced exciting two year-old colt Khan. A brilliant winner of the Listed ATC Breeders Plate, Khan was also sold at Magic Millions fetching $260,000.

"She's done an amazing job since coming to Australia as her first two foals, a colt by Jet Spur and a filly by So You Think, both sold through Magic Millions  fetching $210,000 and $260,000," added ARQANA's Australian representative Damon Gabbedy.

Lot 467 – Colt Zoustar x Snow Bell (Fr)- Consigned by Woodside Park, sold for $250,000 to Ciaron Maher.

A young stakes-winning daughter of Kendargent, Snow Bell was bought by Belmont Bloodstock for €65,000 at the 2013 ARQANA Breeding Stock sale.

"She was the first mare Woodside Park acquired at Deauville and the quality of her first two foals have encouraged them to come back," said Gabbedy.

"Snow Bell has another colt to follow by Written Tycoon and is in foal to Zoustar."

Lot 504 – Colt Zoustar x Swooning (Ire)- Consigned by Yarraman Park, sold for $180,000 to Paul Willetts.

Swooning was a €100,000 buy by Belmont Bloodstock at the 2013 ARQANA Breeding Stock Sale and this is her first foal. She is being given every chance to succeed as she has a weanling colt by I Am Invincible and is in foal to Written Tycoon.

"She is a prime example of a mare with impeccable bloodlines and deserves every opportunity that comes her way," Gabbedy said.

Lot 625
– Filly Choisir x Amo Ami Ama (Ire)- Consigned by Milburn Creek, sold for $160,000 to Gai Waterhouse/First Light/Paul Willetts.

By champion sire Monsun from a dual American Group I winner, Amo Ami Ama was bought for €100,000 by Belmont Bloodstock in 2013. She has a weanling colt by Zoffany (IRE) and is in foal to Coolmore young gun Pride of Dubai.

"After she was purchased her half brother Ampere won a Group II and was Group I placed adding considerable value to her pedigree," Gabbedy revealed.

"There have been offers from Europe to try and buy her back, so she's a great asset for John Muir's Milburn Creek broodmare band."

The 2017 ARQANA Breeding Stock Sale is from December 9 – 12.
