Karaka 2017 will showcase the first yearling crops of 18 exciting new
sires.
Among the first crop sires are the New Zealand-based quartet – Shamexpress, Ferlax,
Jakkalberry, and Sweet Orange.
Below is a brief synopsis on each of the new sires represented, commencing with
the NZ domiciled stallions.
Shamexpress
(O'Reilly x Volkrose by Volksraad)

With 19 yearlings catalogued at the Premier Yearling Sale, Shamexpress, has the
highest representation of the first-time sellers. His offspring have already
been well received at the Gold Coast sales where three yearlings by the Group
One winning son of O'Reilly went through the ring. His top priced lot, a filly
out of Burlesque, was knocked down for A$300,000 to former Kiwi trainer Trent
Busuttin. The three Shamexpress yearlings sold averaged A$156,666.
"We identified two fillies that we thought would suit that market and we are
very pleased with the outcome," Windsor Park Stud general manager Steve Till
said.
"It was gratifying to see the acceptance in the market and it has set a good
tone for Karaka."
Out of the Volksraad mare Volkrose, a half-sister to the Group One placed
O'Reilly Rose, Shamexpress competed at the highest level in Australia's elite
sprints. In addition to winning the Gr.1 VRC Newmarket Handicap, he also ran
second in the Gr.1 VRC Sprint Classic and Gr.1 Lightning Stakes and finished
third in the Gr.1 VRC Coolmore Stud Stakes.
Sure to be a head-turner among the Shamexpress yearlings is the white colt out
of the Zabeel mare, The Opera House. Lot 449 will be among the most photographed
yearlings on the Karaka complex.

Ferlax
(Pentire x Legs Akimbo by Marscay)

Haunui Farm's ill-fated Ferlax will be well represented at Karaka with 24 yearlings
catalogued across the Premier, Select and Festival sales.
"We are very happy with the way they are coming to hand," Haunui Farm managing
director Mark Chitty said. "They have nice scope and presence and mentally they
are handling it well. The proof will be in the sale ring."
The winner of four races from 1200m to 1600m, the pinnacle of Ferlax's racing
career came when winning the stallion making Gr.1 Australian Guineas in 2013.
He also finished second behind Atlantic Jewel in the Gr.1 Memsie Stakes.
A son of champion sire Pentire, Ferlax is out of the Marscay mare Legs Akimbo,
herself a daughter of the multiple stakes winning Tights mare, Leggings.
Haunui Farm will sell three Ferlax yearlings at the Premier sale, including a
colt from Gondola Girl, a winning half-sister to multiple Group One winner Show
A Heart.

Jakkalberry

Novara Park's foundation sire Jakkalberry will be represented by 16 yearlings
at Karaka.
A son of the Machiavellian stallion Storming Home, the well-travelled
Jakkalberry is a half-brother to four stakes winners, including the Italian
Group One winners Crackerjack King and Awelmarduk.
Jakkalberry is the Group One winner of 12 races, with his successes coming in
Italy, Dubai, the United States and Great Britain. He is best remembered in
this hemisphere for his third placing behind Green Moon and Fiorente in the
2012 Melbourne Cup.
"The feedback from the parades has been very positive," Novara Park's Ray
Knight said. "I am really looking forward to the sale. They are lovely,
athletic horses and I couldn't be happier with the two we have in Premier."
The first Jakkalberry colt to go through the Karaka ring is a three-quarter
brother to VRC Derby winner Lion Tamer, while his other Premier sale
representative is a half-brother to Gr.1 Melbourne Cup and VRC Derby winner
Efficient.

Sweet Orange
(War Front x Good Vibes by Unbridled's Song)

Highview Stud's Hong Kong Group One winner Sweet Orange will be represented at
Karaka by a modest selection from his first crop. A son of champion American
sire War Front, Sweet Orange is a four-time winner, including the HK-G1 Hong
Kong Classic Mile, while he also placed in the Hong Kong Derby and Queen Elizabeth
II Cup.
"They have created a huge impression," Highview Stud's Brent Gillovic
said. "The potential purchasers who have been here for the last two or
three parades have been blown away."
"They are sound, tough looking horses and I expect them to sell very
well," he said. "Sweet Orange was a stakes winning two-year-old in
Ireland and there are plenty of these that are going to be two-year-olds, they
look like runners."

Camelot : A son of Montjeu whose six
wins included Group One victories in the English Derby, Irish Derby, English 2000
Guineas and Racing Post Trophy. The former Coolmore Australia shuttle stallion is
represented by 10 yearlings at Karaka.

Dawn Approach : By New Approach, Dawn Approach is the winner of eight
races including victories in the English 2000 Guineas, Dewhurst Stakes,
National Stakes and St James's Palace Stakes. Dawn Approach shuttles to Darley

Declaration Of War : a son of War Front, Declaration Of War's seven wins
included the Gr.1 Queen Anne Stakes and the Gr.1 Juddmonte International

Dundeel : A son of High Chaparral, Dundeel was bred, owned
and trained in New Zealand. Prepared by Murray Baker, Dundeel won 10 races
including six at Group One level. He won Sydney's three-year-old Triple Crown
of the Randwick Guineas, Rosehill Guineas and Australian Derby. Based at
Arrowfield Stud in Australia, there are 10 Dundeel yearlings catalogued for
Karaka, nine of them in the Premier session.

Epaulette : A
three-parts brother to Helmet by Commands, Epaulette is the winner of five races, including the Gr.1 Doomben
Ten Thousand and the Gr.1 Golden Rose. He stands at Darley Australia, and has

Eurozone: By Northern Meteor, Eurozone
won the Gr.2 Stan Fox Stakes and the Listed Rosebud Handicap. Eurozone was

Sun: By Northern
Meteor, Fighting Sun was the winner of his only two starts which included the

Spirit Of Boom: A dual Group One
winner, Spirit Of Boom won the William Reid Stakes and Doomben 10,000. He won
nine races in total, five at stakes level, earning over A$2.4m in prizemoney.
Based at Eureka Stud in Queensland, Spirit Of Boom is represented by two
yearlings in the Select Sale.

The Factor: By War Front, The
Factor was the winner of six races, including the Gr.1 Malibu Stakes and Gr.1 Pat

catalogued at Karaka.

Unencumbered was a precocious juvenile trained by Bjorn Baker. The winner of
the Gr.3 B.J. McLachlan Stakes, Unencumbered won the Magic Millions 2YO

Unencumbered is represented by two yearlings in the Select Sale.
