Formerly trained by Graeme Spackman, Hangover Monday ($12) landed the Shoalhaven City Council Handicap (1200m) under Adrian Layt in Spackman's colours

The 73-year-old Spackman passed away on Tuesday morning after a short battle with cancer.

Well known in country NSW as a quiet achiever and a good bloke, Spackman enjoyed success across Southern NSW and his most recent winner was Only In Red at Nowra last October.

Burleigh now trains out of the Goulburn stables formerly occupied by Spackman having retired from race riding after being apprenticed to Spackman.

Layt told Sky Thoroughbred Central it was an honour to win aboard Hangover Monday.

"He (Spackman) was a true gentleman - you couldn't say much more than that," Layt said.

"He was a great horseman, he'd give anyone a hand and he's a great loss to the industry. I'm just honoured to win this race in his colours."
