Magic Millions Sprint Next for Hidden Dragon's Hidden Pearl

Mark Smith - Saturday December 31

At the ripe old age of six, Hidden Pearl broke through for her first stakes win in Saturday's Listed Gopher Coffee Falvelon Quality Handicap (1000m) at Eagle Farm, earning her a wildcard into the $1 million Magic Millions Sprint (1200m) at the Gold Coast on January 14.

Given a positive ride by Brad Pengelly, the Barry Lockwood-trained mare set a new track record when leading all the way to beat South Australian-trained Viddora (I Am Invincible)) by three-quarters of a length with Prompt Return (Beneteau) one and three-quarter length back in third.

She advances her overall record to 8 wins, 2 seconds and 1 third from 17 starts with earnings of $326,980.

Lockwood got the daughter of Hidden Dragon as a 4-start maiden. She won first-up for the Eagle Farm based trainer at the Sunshine Coast in April last year then kept the winning run going at Doomben and Toowoomba.

In 10 starts since Hidden Pearl has only been off the board three times, two of those, the Group III Mumm Stakes at Flemington and the Group II Concorde Stakes at Randwick, coming in high-class interstate Group races.

"She's been pretty special," Lockwood said.

"She was one of those horses that might have come here and won a maiden. But from day one she kept on improving to the point now, she is in black-type company.

"She should get an invite to the Magic Millions Sprint and that's where she'll be.

"She felt the pinch in the last 50 but they were scooting."

A homebred for the Purcell Family and partners, Hidden Pearl is the third foal of the four time winner Panama.

A daughter of Beautiful Crown (USA), Panama has a yearling filly by Snippetson and was covered by Nicconi last year.

Hidden Pearl becomes the sixth stakes-winner for Lyndhurst Stud Farm's Hidden Dragon (Danehill) (pictured) who will not have a representative at the Magic Millions Yearling sale in January.
