Ellis Celebrates Latest Winner for Burgundy

Media Release - Wednesday December 28
David Ellis celebrated one of his most satisfying wins when Nucleonic posted an impressive debut victory at New Plymouth.

The Te Akau principal got a special kick out of the filly's success on Tuesday as he co-bred the two-year-old with Nearco Stud's Greg Tomlinson, who also remains in the ownership along with friends David and Matt Peacocke.

Nucleonic - Race ImagesEllis gained further enjoyment as Nucleonic is a daughter of the Group winner Burgundy, who he purchased as a yearling at Karaka in 2010 for $1.3 million.

"I'm over the moon. It's one of the biggest thrills I've ever had in racing, even though it was a small race at Taranaki, I can't describe how excited I am," he said.

"Burgundy has now had three winners, but that is just the beginning because I have some beautiful Burgundys at home on the farm. '

"We've got a paddock full of yearlings and foals by him that are all just beautiful types.

"He produces horses that are very athletic with good heads, good strong hindquarters and he's going to be a really good sire.

The Cambridge Stud-based stallion's other winning representatives have been Hard Merchandize and Dijon Bleu.

"He (Burgundy) is a horse that was easily the fastest that Te Akau ever trained and I don't think there are many trainers at Matamata that are surprised at the fact that he is leaving good horses because most of them that saw him gallop know how fast and what a good racehorse he was," Ellis said.

Nucleonic is out of Volksraad's daughter Mexican Rose, who won two of her first three starts in New Zealand before she went on to champion two and three-year-old honours in Singapore.

"Greg Tomlinson and I bought Mexican Rose," Ellis said. "We've sold two O'Reilly colts out of her for good money, her weanling this year topped the weanling sale, and the mare is currently in foal to Vancouver.

"David and Matt (Peacocke) are very good supporters of our stable and really good friends of mine and I'm just so thrilled to have them in this filly." – NZ Racing Desk.
