Tough As Teak Kenjorwood Claims Lord Stakes

Mark Smith - Monday December 26

It took 47 starts for Kenjorwood to earn his first stakes win in Monday's Listed Swettenham Stud Lord Stakes (1800m) at Caulfield but few horses deserved it more.

Forced to carry the topweight of 60kgs the 7yo son of Snippetson battled bravely to a neck win over Hell Or Highwater ($4) with Khutulun ($10) a short head away third. (photo Darryl Sherer)

Trainer Darren Weir was full of praise for Kenjorwood.

"He did it the tough way but he's such a good racehorse with a real will to win when you get him right he toughs it out well," Weir said.

"He's in great shape and when you get horses like this in form they can race up on speed and tough it out.

"He's a Magic Millions horse so we might freshen him up and he can be a travelling companion for Lucky Hussler but we were aiming for this race and have got the job done so we'll just see."

Winning rider Brad Rawiller said he was up against it after a slow start.

"I know it didn't look good but that was where you needed to be," Rawiller said.

"We thought the best part of the track is three and four horses off the fence and that's where we wanted to be.

"He stumbled at the start so I couldn't be where I wanted to be and had to press on.

"He's very tough and once he settled into a rhythm he was comfortable. He was the best horse in the race as the handicapper showed.

"When you're without cover it's never good but I was conscious of the fact I was in the best ground."

A $41,000 purchase by part-owner Leigh Winwood from the Grenville Stud draft at the 2011 Magic Millions Tasmania Yearling sale, Kenjorwood advances his record to 10 wins, 10 seconds, and 7 thirds from 45 starts with earnings of $686,051.

The win will be welcomed at Grenville Stud who will be offering a full-sister to Kenjorwood at next year's Magic Millions Tasmanian Yearling sale.

Their dam, the stakes-placed Flying Spur mare Flying Diva, had a Written Tycoon filly on October 7.

Kenjorwood becomes the 12th stakes winner Snippetson who now stands at Scenic Lodge Thoroughbred Stud for a fee of $7,150 after beginning his career at Widden Stud.
