December
has been good for Newgate Farm's exciting young sire Foxwedge, who featured at
Sandown on Wednesday with another new winner in Barjeel, his 11th winner since
the start of the month.
Gelded after two even runs back in June for the Hayes / Dabernig stable,
Barjeel was second when resuming from a spell at Wangaratta on December 6 .
He showed plenty of improvement for this assignment to race away and win the
1400 metre maiden by a length and a half.
A $360,000 Inglis Easter purchase for Shadwell Australia from the Canning Downs
draft, Barjeel is the last foal of Group II winning Thorn Park mare Te Akau
Coup, who died in 2013.
Foxwedge is riding high on the Australian Second Season Sires list where he is
second to Smart Missile by earnings and winners, but tellingly has two Australian
stakes-winners to his credit in Foxplay and Kentucky Miss, plus the New Zealand
Group II winner Volce Velope, which is more than any of his peers.
Foxwedge has good representation at upcoming sales with 27 for Magic Millions
and 17 for Inglis Classic.
