Foxwedge Filly Breaks Her Maiden at Moonee Valley

Mark Smith - Friday December 16

Placed behind Golden Slipper hero Capitalist at her career debut in the Wyong 2yo Classic 12 months ago, Foxwedge filly Aghna broke her maiden when making her seasonal debut for new trainers David and Ben Hayes and Tom Dabernig at Moonee Valley on Friday night.

Ridden by Mark Zahra, Aghna was among the best to begin and received a charmed run on the back of the pacesetting Sallybrook.

While Sallybrook (Swiss Ace) gave a good kick for Jordan Turner, Aghna gradually wore her down to win by three-quarters of a length as the pair put a space on the field.

Armenia (More Than Ready was three lengths back in third.

There is now a chance Aghna, will head to Magic Millions raceday on the Gold Coast, which comes two days after Vinery Stud will consign the Foxwedge filly's full sister (Lot 245) to the Magic Millions Yearling sale.

"She's done nothing but impress at home," stable representative  Bruno Rouge-Serret said.

"She's eligible for the Magic Millions. There's a 1400 metre race for her at the Gold Coast.

"David and Tom will sit down and work out if that is going to be the right option for her or not.

"The way she ran through the line today you would think, the way she settled, 1400 mightn't be a problem to her.

Purchased for $50,000 by former trainer Gabrielle Englebrecht out of the Newgate Farm draft at the 2015 Magic Millions Yearling sale, Aghna (pictured as a yearling) is the fourth foal of the former talented racemare Moonboat, a stakes-placed daughter of Encosta de Lago.

Moonboat's dam Moon Cha Cha (Marscay) is a three-quarter sister to Canny Miss the dam of Group 1 Queensland derby winner Camarena herself the dam of dual Group 1 winner Camarilla who kept the family fortunes going by leaving the Group 1 Flight Stakes winner Guelph.

It's the family of Golden Slipper winners Canny Lad and Sepoy.

Both the winning sire, Foxwedge, and the dam Moonboat were raced by the late Dr Edmund Bateman and wife Belinda.

Moonboat was purchased by Sona Bloodstock's Kevin Pitstock for $50,000 at last year's Inglis Australian Broodmare sale when carrying her third consecutive filly by Foxwedge.

Foxwedge enjoyed a two state metropolitan double as earlier in the day he sired three year-old filly Arizona Wildcat to win easily at Morphettville in Adelaide for the Lloyd Kennewell stable.

Foxwedge has a terrific draft of 27 yearlings entered for Magic Millions, click here to see them.
