Nicks That Click – Redoute’s Choice

Tara Madgwick - Thursday December 8
As we move towards the 2017 yearling sale season everyone becomes a pedigree expert, so in a new series of Breednet articles we'll look at nicks that click which might help lead you to a future racetrack star.

Stratum Star - Grant CourtneyScoring a second Group I win in the $1million WATC Kingston Town Classic last Saturday was classy Stratum entire Stratum Star, who is one of 29 stakes-winners to feature the nick between Arrowfield Stud's champion sire Redoute's Choice and Last Tycoon (IRE), the champion Australian sire of 1993/1994.

Stratum Star is by ill-fated Redoute's Choice stallion Stratum and his grand-dam is by Last Tycoon's champion sire O'Reilly.

Redoute's Choice and Last Tycoon have something in common in that both carry the blood of influential matriarch Best in Show and line breeding to her is often seen as a big positive by the serious pedigree analysts.

The nick between the two sires runs at 65.2% winners to runners with 264 winners from 405 runners including 29 stakes-winners headed by seven Group I winners.

Stratum Star is from a daughter of Pins, so you could argue his success is a result of the Redoute's Choice x Snippets nick, which has also been highly successful.

The nick between them runs at 62.5% with 175 winners from 280 runners including 15 stakes-winners headed by four Group I winners including leading sire Snitzel and Golden Slipper winner Crystal Lily.

Right up there with Last Tycoon and Snippets for success with Redoute's Choice is champion New Zealand sire Zabeel.

When superstar filly Samantha Miss came along in 2008, she made the cross extremely popular, so for Zabeel mares, Redoute's Choice and his sons have always been a popular pick since then.

Written TycoonThe nick runs at 65.6% winners to runners with 301 winners from 459 runners including 33 stakes-winners headed by four Group I winners including champion sprinter Lankan Rupee.

The rise of Last Tycoon's grand-son Written Tycoon to become one of the most popular sires in the country has brought the nick between Redoute's Choice and Last Tycoon into new focus.

Written Tycoon has to this point in time had nine runners from mares that carry Redoute's Choice and eight of them have won headed by Group I winner Luna Rossa, stakes-winners Written Dash and Stoker as well as stakes-placed Masthead.

Now that's food for thought!
