One of 112 live foals from the final crop of Street Cry (IRE), the heavy backed Trekking gave his supporters little cause for concern when making a winning career debut over 1100 metres at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday.
Carrying the royal blue silks of Godolphin, James Doyle positioned the 2yo colt behind the 2yo colt behind the pacesetting Pymble. After shouldering his way clear of a weakening All Too Ready, Trekking disposed of Pymble with a minimum of effort before holding the challenge of the Bjorn Baker-trained Goodfella (Snitzel) by one and a half lengths with the winner's stablemate Gaulois (Street Cry) the same distance back in third.(photo Steve Hart)
Trainer John O'Shea said the son of Street Cry (IRE) would be given his chance in stakes races in the autumn.
"He had to bullock his way out. I think it was good for both the horse and rider to get on the board," O'Shea said.
"A lot of credit to the team at home, he has been a bit of a lad.
"He was racing for his manhood today.
"One thing he does have is a bunch of ability and that can get you a long way.
"He can have a short little break and come back in the autumn.
Winning rider James Doyle said he was relieved to break his duck in Australia.
"I've come over a few times without scoring in some big races," Doyle said.
"I know it's only a maiden but it's nice to get the win.
"It's so different to what I'm used to
Trekking is the first foal of the three-time winning Redoute's Choice mare Outdoor a daughter of the outstanding Stravinsky (USA) mare Serenade Rose whose 8 wins included the Group I AJC Oaks, Group 1 VRC Oaks and Group I Arrowfield Stakes.
Tragically, Serenade Rose had just three foals before her death in 2011.
Outdoor was her first foal and three-time winner Entertains, a three-quarter sister to Trekking, was her second.
The broodmare career of Entertains will be in Europe after she was exported to Great Britain in September last year.
The third and final
Outdoor has a 2yo colt by Medaglia d'Oro (USA) and was covered last spring by Lonhro.
