Winner of the Group III RJ Peters Stakes at Ascot just over 12 months ago, Hazzabeel had been winless in six starts before running away with Sunday's $130,000 Listed bet365 Kilmore Cup (1600m).
Having just his second start for Ciaron Maher after previously been trained by Daniel Morton, Hazzabeel came from well back in the field under Michael Dee to defeat Inspector by one and three-quarter lengths with the favourite The Chairman a long-neck back in third.
Carrying the colours of Craig Thompson's Mt Hallowell Stud the lightly raced 6yo son of Zabeel advanced his overall record to 7 wins and 1 third from 17 starts with earnings of $307,300.
It's good to win one for Ciaron Maher and the team," Dee said.
"It's a super training effort to get this horse back after his form tailed off in WA then bringing him back with a nice fresh first-up run at Flemington (over 1200m) then straight to the mile today.
"He relaxed beautifully in the run then worked into it stylishly and won with ease."
Purchased by Gai Waterhouse /James Harron Bloodstock for $180,000 from Valachi Downs draft at New Zealand Bloodstock's 2012 Premier Sale, Hazzabeel (pictured as a yearling) is a half-brother to Group 1 winner Vespa (Elusive City), winner of the Group 1 Diamond Stakes.
Bred by Kevin Hickman of Valachi Downs, Hazabeel is out of Miss Avalon (Fantastic Light), a half-sister to stakes winner Toruk Macto.
Miss Avalon is out of the Group III Princess Margaret Stakes winner Mythical Girl (Gone West) herself a daughter of Green Desert's stakes-winning sister Yoesefia (Danzig).
