John
Thompson is coaxing career best from progressive Nicconi mare Nieta, who posted
her fifth win from just nine starts when bolting away to win easily at Rosehill
on Saturday.
Taken quietly through her grades, Nieta (pictured Steve Hart) stamped herself as a mare on the rise
with this victory and connections are looking at chasing Black Type with her
over the summer.
"I haven't been as confident off a track gallop after I worked her this
week, as I was coming here today," said winning rider Josh Parr.
"What can you say? She's bombproof.
"Off a hot speed she was able to show a classy turn of foot and had them
beaten in a matter of three strides.
"A turn of foot like hers is three quarters of the job done, especially
going up in grade. To be able to travel off the speed regardless of how quick
they go. She'll win a good race, it's as simple as that."
Nieta will now target the Listed ATC Starlight Stakes (1100m) at Rosehill on
December 3.
A $20,000 Magic Millions purchase for part-owner Greg De Vries from the
Holbrook Thoroughbreds draft, Nieta has won over $166,000 in prizemoney.
She is the best of four winners from Brookton Flash, a half-sister to dual
Group I winner Sincero.
Widden Stud's quiet achiever, Nicconi has had a strong start to the season with
over 40 winners of over $1.6 million and three stakes-winners in Faatinah, Hear
the Chant and Caipirhina.
