Husson Eagle In Search of More Riches at the Magic Millions

Mark Smith - Saturday November 12

Lightly raced Husson (ARG) gelding Husson Eagle edged closer to a million dollars in earnings when returning from a 203 days break to capture Saturday's $120,000 Listed OTI Racing Doveton Stakes (1000m) at Sandown.

Ridden by Michelle Payne for brother Patrick, the 4yo gelding finished powerfully to defeat Miss Promiscuity by one and a quarter lengths with Rock 'n' Gold a long head back in third.

It was his first win since winning the Magic Millions Sprint in January and the $1 million race is on the agenda again next year.

A $42,500 purchase by Joe O'Neil's Prime Thoroughbreds at the Magic Millions Adelaide Yearling Sale, Husson Eagle advances his overall record to 5 wins, 3 seconds and 3 thirds from 19 starts for earnings of $913,218.

"He's a beautiful little horse," Michelle Payne said.

"It's great to get a winner for Joe (O'Neill) and all the owners of Prime Thoroughbreds; they have been great supporters of me and Patrick.

"He (Husson Eagle) gives you 120% every time he goes out there.

"I'm so wrapped to get the job done for Patrick, he's been a great supporter and I'm really proud of this little horse."

Joe O'Neill said it was all roads back to the Gold Coast in January.

"It's a great advertisement for racing that a $40,000 horse can win over $900,000," O'Neill said

"He will go to the Gold Coast for the $1 million race and Magic Millions who are such great supporters of racing, that $10 million day, the biggest raceday in Australian racing, we'll be very happy to have him there."

Bred by Patinack Farm, Husson Eagle is a half-brother to the useful filly Haveyaway (Gonski) out of the winning Royal Academy (USA) mare Tie Me Up, herself a half-sister to dual Listed stakes-winner Wonderful Lass (Catbird).

Tie Me Up is out of the stakes-placed Snippets mare Convent Girl who is a three-quarter sister to Rick Hore-Lacy's outstanding sprinter Spartacus whose seven wins included the Group 1 Manikato Stakes, Group 1 Australia Stakes and Group 1 Oakleigh Plate.

Convent Girl's unraced half-sister Success Tale is the dam of Group 1 Caulfield Guineas winner Wonderful World (Agnes World) who finished second to El Segundo in the 2007 Group 1 WS Cox Plate.

Tie Me Up has a filly foal by Zoustar on September 29 after her 2014 colt by All Too Hard died after birth.
