"It is with deep sadness I report Champion Broodmare Circles Of Gold passed away peacefully and quietly today at Segenhoe," said Segenhoe Stud General Manager, Peter O'Brien.
"I had the true honour to have been associated with her for 21 of her 25 years and she truly was one of a kind.
"A beautifully quiet mare whose exploits through her daughters and granddaughters will continue on for many years to come, it seems only fitting that her grandson Highland Reel won the Breeders Cup on Sunday to highlight her lineage.
"She will be buried alongside her great mates and fellow champions Parfore and Skating on top of a hill at Segenhoe and I would like to thank Frank Tagg, Frank Meduri and Garry Moffit her owners who have spared no expense with her care long after she retired from breeding.
"She will be sorely missed by all at Segenhoe and everyone is acutely aware of the privilege it was to have been associated with her."
By Golden Slipper winner Marscay from a daughter of renowned New Zealand staying sire Zamazaan (Fr), Circles of Gold was blessed with a unique blend of speed and stamina which she passed down through the generations.
She had 12 named foals, all of whom raced with nine of them winners headed by the great globe-trotting champions Elvstroem and Haradasun.
Her Group I placed daughter Hveger has written a new chapter of success for the family as the dam of superstar stayer Highland Reel, a four time Group I winner in three different countries, whose latest victory came just last weekend in the Group I Breeders Cup Turf at Santa Anita.
Segenhoe is now home to her last filly foal Comaneci (born in 2011), who was bought earlier this year at the Inglis Australian Broodmare Sale for $780,000 by James Harron Bloodstock.
She produced her first foal (pictured above) for new owners Fairway Thoroughbreds in early August, a filly by champion sire Fastnet Rock.
