16th Stakes Winner for Charge Forward

Mark Smith - Sunday November 6

Placed in the Group II Karrakatta Plate (1200m), Group III WA Sires' Produce Stakes (1400m), Bunbury 3YO Classic (1000m) and Listed Belgravia Stakes (1200m), the Dan Morton-trained Saul's Special broke through for a well-deserved maiden stakes success in Saturday's $100,000 Listed Fairetha Stakes (1400m) at Ascot.

Ridden by Brad Parnham, the 3yo son of Charge Forward came from fifth on the home turn with a determined finish to edge Humanity (Al Maher) by a head with the winner's stablemate Lusaha (More Than Ready) a half-head back in third.

It advances the overall record of Saul's Special to 2 wins, 2 seconds and 2 thirds with earnings of $253,900.

He is now likely to target the Group II $500,000 WA Guineas on November 29.

Purchased by Craig Thompson's Mt Hallowell Stud for $160,000 at the 2015 Magic Millions Perth Yearling sale, Saul's Special is the third foal of the Flying Spur mare Cortina Gal who won the Wyong Magic Millions 2yo Slipper.

Cortina Gal was consigned by Bell River Thoroughbreds to the 2013 Easter Broodmare Sale when carrying the future Fairetha Stakes winner.

She was knocked down to Belmont Bloodstock Agency on behalf of Oaklands Stud for $70,000.

A half-sister to the stakes-placed Geared Up (Testa Rossa), Cortina Gal is a granddaughter of the Group I AuRC Railway Stakes winner Silver Tip (One Pound Sterling).

Cortina Gal has a yearling filly by Husson (ARG) and foaled a colt by Lonhro's son Sessions on October 17.
