Tavistock mare Tavi Bay started Oaks Day in great style by giving last year's
Melbourne Cup winning jockey Michelle Payne a winning start to the program.
Well-tuned by Henry Dwyer with three trials under her belt, Tavi Bay was fit
and ready to fire at 1700 metres first up and arrived with a well-timed run to
snare a half neck win.
"We were confident coming in as she was set for this race and I thought there
was good improvement to come from her trial last week," Payne said, also
offering thanks to the mare's managing part-owner Brendan Tohill of Shergar
Thoroughbreds, who gave her the ride.
A modest $7,000 purchase for Shergar Thoroughbreds from the NZB South Island
2YO and Mixed Bloodstock Sale, Tavi Bay has won three of eight starts earning
over $122,000 in prizemoney.
She is one of two winners from Viking Ruler mare Bantry Bay, whose dam is a
half-sister to Melbourne Cup winner Empire Rose.
It's also the family of Group I Queensland Derby winner Empires Choice, so
don't be surprised if Tavi Bay, who was a Breednet 'One to Watch' when breaking her maiden last year, doesn't emerge as a handy stayer in 2017.
