A
Golden Slipper winning sire, who became an outstanding broodmare sire, Canny
Lad featured at Moonee Valley on Saturday when his progressive daughter Kaniana
claimed a valuable Black Type win in the Group III MVRC Tesio Stakes.
Given plenty of time to mature, six year-old Kaniana has made rapid progress in
the last two years since joining the stable of Darren Weir and has acquitted
herself well in Group races at her past two runs.
Well ridden by Damian Lane she did best in a thrilling finish to post a
three-quarter length win in the 1600 metre feature taking her overall record to
five wins from 20 starts with prizemoney topping $250,000.
Retained to race by her breeders, Kaniana is the second and final foal from St
Anna, a Umatilla mare from an international family featuring Group I winners
such as Ashayer, Aquaarid, Teenoso, Rule of Law, Olympic Glory, etc.
Kaniana is the 37th stakes-winner for Canny Lad, who died at Darley in 2014 following a long and successful stud career, firstly at Woodlands Stud and then for Darley.
